How to Remediate Mold Yourself

Mold can be a serious nuisance. Mold can darken grout lines, discolor drywall, cause black spots on siding and decks, and grow on damp wood. It can also be dangerous for your health. Microspores from mold can cause allergies, sneezing and runny noses.

Mold Removal Safety Tips

These precautions are recommended if you need to remove black mold from more than a few feet.

  • You can wash and toss old clothes and shoes after cleaning.
  • Use special N95 and P-100 respirators in conjunction with goggles or gloves.
  • To ventilate the area while you work, place an old fan or a newer cheap one in a window. It’s almost impossible to get rid of the spores if you clean them off. Tape plywood or cardboard around window openings to stop spores from blowing back in.
  • Moldy carpets can be wrapped in plastic 6-mm in thickness and taped.
  • You can control airborne spores by moistening moldy areas while you are working with a garden sprayer.
  • To stop spores from spreading, turn off the furnace and air conditioner.
  • When vacuuming, keep your dry/wet vacuum outside.

To remove mold yourself, follow these steps:

  • Identify and repair the source of moisture that is causing the mold.
  • Wear protective gear such as gloves, masks, and eye protection.
  • Clean the moldy surface with a solution of one cup of bleach mixed with a gallon of water.
  • Scrub the area thoroughly and let the solution sit for 10 minutes.
  • Rinse the area with water and let it air dry completely.
  • Repeat the process if necessary.
  • Consider hiring a professional for larger mold problems or if you have health concerns.
